An iPhone with a USB-C port, you thought you would never have the opportunity to see this? It is however possible, and it is of course not Apple which is at the origin of it.

In a short YouTube video, Kenny Pi shows that he has succeeded in changing the proprietary Lightning plug of an iPhone to a universal USB-C plug. He promises the upcoming release of a longer video in which he explain how he got there.

A USB-C port on iPhone, it can work!

As Kenny Pi shows us, this iPhone with USB-C port is quite functional: it can be recharged and supports transfer files via this connection.

The hacker explains that he had to analyze the Apple C94 connector in depth in order to make a homemade printed circuit equipped with a port for female USB-C, the main challenge residing in the miniaturization of such a component so that can enter the frame of the device.

Is Apple going to abandon the Lightning port?

The European Commission wants to impose the USB-C port for charging electronic devices in order to harmonize connectors and accessories on the market. Apple would be the main concerned by such a measure, the company is the only one in the mobile segment to keep a proprietary format with the Lightning.

If the text is voted on, USB-C will become a mandatory standard from 2024. But that does not necessarily mean that Apple will adopt it... We know that the Apple brand has a design project iPhone devoid of any connection, which would only rely on wireless technologies for charging, audio or file transfer. It's entirely possible that when Apple finally gets rid of Lightning, it won't be to switch to USB-C, but to simply remove any type of port.
