Intel Core S of 11th generation is formalized: all about the 19 new CPUs for office pc

After the low-consumption CPUs for laptops, Intel has just formalized its core I-11000 alias Rocket Lake-s.The new processor architecture for desktop PCs is based on new hearts, the XE graphics chip, a brand new memory controller and, on the platform side, chipsets with an OC -extended support.What doesn't really change on paper is the 14 nm engraving process.

A real evolution?

If we only looked at the number of hearts and the engraving process, this 11th generation of Intel Core I does not impress at all.Nevertheless, Intel's approach is different from the previous generation: instead of again adapting the Skylake architecture introduced with the 6th generation Core I with more hearts and an optimized 14 Nm engraving process,Intel used the architecture designed for 10 Nm (and already used in laptops) with a 14 nm engraving process.

We are therefore always on 14 Nm, more precisely 14 nm +++, but Intel uses the architecture of the Sunny Cove processor.This new processor architecture therefore introduces novelties in almost all areas.It offers reduced latencies thanks to new algorithms, more performance thanks to larger buffers and caches as well as new Instructions for Instructions Extensions.

This remains a disappointment: the TSMC founder makes chips in 5 nm, for Apple for example.While Intenl has trouble preparing the 7 Nm engraving process for series production by the end of 2022 - when TSMC plans to switch to 3 nm.

Note that for the first time for a long time, Intel openly declared the number of transistors: Rocket Lake-S has about 6 billion, the predecessor had just under 4 billion.This is a surprising amount, especially since the processor matrix only went from around 202 to around 270 mm².

A new GPU: XE

For the first time on office PCs, we have already seen it on portable PC (Tiger Lake), the new XX graphics architecture of Intel is also present.

Players will wonder why it is used on an office PC, they don't need it because they already have dedicated graphics cards.On the other hand, professional customers and OEMs who often do not use additional graphics card will therefore benefit from this IGPU.In addition to taking care of the rendering, this IGPU offers an HEVC and even AV1 acceleration for reading recent video formats.

Enfin duPCIe 4.0!

Another innovation, if we can call it innovation, is the arrival of the PCI Express 4.0.All current graphics cards support it and compatible SSDs have been around for years.And even if the performance gains are rather of theoretical nature, in practice we can scratch some percentages of more performance.Intel Rocket Lake-S offers 20PCIe 4 channels.0, 16 for the graphics card and 4 for the SSD.PCIe 4.0 should operate on mother cards with Intel's Z490 chipset, that is to note if you plan to set up a new Intel configuration.

Finally, Intel launches a single chip with eight hearts for Rocket Lake-S, the whole is made up of five models.The five basic models are: Core i9-11900, Core i7-11700, Core i5-11600, Core i5-11500 and Core i5-11400.Among the three larger ones, there are K models allowing overclocking, there are also F versions without integrated graphic part - and, as usual, the KF combination.

Is that enough to exceed AMD?

On paper, the Core i9 and Core 7 will have trouble against the overwhelming power of the Ryzen 5000.Looking at the most powerful AMD's most powerful Ryzen chips, the Core i9-11900k is a bit disadvantaged on paper.The next Intel processor only offers eight hearts, not twelve like the Ryzen 9 5900x or even 16 like the Ryzen 5950X.

Even if Intel is ahead of games thanks to its IGPUs, performance will certainly be more important for AMD in applications.The Core i7-11700K is nevertheless to be monitored according to its sale price, but also its availability.This is the card to play for Intel: it is difficult to find availability at AMD, so it is a boulevard for Intel that will certainly be able to produce a lot of CPUs thanks to the reuse of the engraving process in 14 nm.You have to see positive things in each situation.
