In recent years, Samsung has embarked on the wonderful world of ultra high -end smartphones by providing a major innovation, the foldable smartphone. If this innovation is not as major as some others, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 consolidates the range by bringing many highly anticipated and sometimes innovative developments.

Indeed, the Galaxy Fold first of the name had not already had Z in its name, but was also quite Spartan on certain points.Thick borders, large notch for the camera, fairly small front screen, ... Samsung has, over time, corrected a lot of small flaws of the smartphone of the differences of difference and improved the device in a flagrant manner, let's see inOur Galaxy Z Fold 3 test, what this device is worth.

Design

In its black box decorated with a Z on the top, it is indeed the foldable smartphone of Samsung and not Zorro inside. The device is well put forward and carefully packed. In the rest of the packaging, under the smartphone that you have to withdraw first, is a small card with the headphones on one side, wired, as well as the load cable on the other side.

Samsung, like Apple, removed the mains charger from the pack of its smartphones.A few weeks after paid Apple's head when the Californian manufacturer had made his announcement, which was excessively funny at the time. You will therefore no longer find a mains charger in certain Samsung smartphones, starting with the Z Fold 3.

We also regret finding wired headphones with such a high -end smartphone, marketed beyond 1500 euros, for a price that runs around 1800 euros.Samsung could have provided wireless headphones, even for a few more euros, put on we will be satisfied with AKG in the pack.As a reminder, AKG is a brand belonging to Samsung.

The apparatus arrives unfolding, fortunately, although Samsung could have saved 3 cardboard cents by folding it but there was not the goal. The smartphone has changed and in good.Let's start by pearl of the front, which still has edges, but less thick than the first generation. They are more discreet and remain essential for the closure of the device.

Indeed, the snap which is produced would risk by force, to damage the glass or even to break it.On the screen, we also find the front camera at the top, in the middle of the right part. This camera is one of the first to be placed under the screen, which changes a lot to use compared to a classic camera, we will see it.In the center, however, we always find the undeniable fold.

Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.

This fold is less pronounced than on the first opus, but remains present when the smartphone is off.Regarding the front side, that's a bit everything. On the upper edge, there is a speaker on the left (smartphone), as well as a microphone. On the right edge, there are two other microphones, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 has four microphones in total.

At the level of the left edge is the SIM drawer, allowing to accommodate two cards in nano-sim format.Unlike Xperia 1 III, it needs a trombone to open it.

The right slice of the device, in addition to the antennas that are found all over the device, is the volume adjustment button. The latter is in a single module with a button at the top and one at the bottom, to increase or decrease the volume. It's a shame to have put it in one button but I understand, it would not have been practical to have three buttons on the right.

Regarding the side, indeed it is not easy to put it on the left side, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 is therefore one of the rare smartphones excused for the adjustment of the volume on the right edge. The smartphone locking / unlock button is also present, incorporating the fingerprint sensor. Thus, the one and only sensor is here, instead of positioning it under the screen.Especially since the technology used by Samsung for the fingerprint sensor under the screen is not optimal.

On the lower edge is the second speaker on the left shutter. At the level of the right component, we find the microphone for calls, the USB-C port for recharging and OTG as well as antennas on both sides.

Let's talk about the rear, once we fold the smartphone especially, we will talk about the front in a few lines. The back here groups the photo module made up of three sensors. This photo module exceeds the surface of the smartphone and the sensors themselves exceed the surface of the photo module. In all, it exceeds 1.7 mm from the surface of the device.

The photo sensors are quite large and just below, we find the LED flash. The bevel shape of the photo module inspires the high -end, however! We also notice a striking thing on this smartphone.Samsung, who took a flawless pleasure in putting his logo absolutely everywhere on his smartphones before, puts no visible here when the smartphone is unfolded. This unexpected sobriety is appreciated.

The only logo is engraved on the hinge in the middle, when the smartphone is folded, indeed, we notice it on the back, but it remains very discreet.

On the front, always when the smartphone is folded, we find the second screen, which this time takes most of the surface of the device. We have a real screen and not just a small secondary screen to help out in case of quick need. This screen on the folded smartphone is naturally an Amoled slab, protected here by a very discreet protective film.

There is also a front camera, as well as the navigation buttons at the bottom, except that the display ratio changes clearly, we have a really very high and very wide screen. However, what I appreciate with the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is that once folded, it adopts a really ideal form-overtime in hand.It is very pleasant to wear, despite its imposing mass, because it is precisely very little wide, which adapts perfectly to my hands, however quite large.

The little regret, however, remains the day that is left when the device is closed, at the interior level between the two parts of the main screen. But this part close to the hinge does not have so much choice than imposing this day unsightly for a smartphone so expensive.Another novelty is also closing the device. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 resists a little for closing, so as not to slam too violently.

Overall, the device is very well finished and the modifications as well as the improvements are really numerous compared to the first of the name, even if in itself, the concept does not change with this central hinge always present.

As for the grip, from the top of its 271 grams, the weight of the Z Fold 3 is not felt too much, because it is often taken with two hands.

Performance

With such a high -end device, Samsung needed, put the performance level package. This is what the manufacturer did suddenly. The Z Fold 3 has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor, which consists of 1 heart to 2.84 GHz, 3 cores at 2.42 GHz and 4 cores at 1.8 GHz.The processor is also 5G compatible and engraved in 5 nanometers.

With this, there is an Adreno 660 graphic chip, also the most powerful chip at a time when the smartphone has been produced. The device also has 12 GB of RAM in LPDDR5 and a storage capacity of either 256 GB or 512 GB in UFS 3.1 In any case.It is however impossible to add storage via a micro-SD card on the Z Fold 3.With all this, however, performance scores should be interesting.

Antutu du Z Fold 3

Test Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 : un encore plus long et un écran plus grandeval(ez_write_tag([[728,90],'charlestech_fr-box-3','ezslot_16',136,'0','0']));

The antutu score of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is 70,8906 points. It's good but for such a smartphone, we would have been able to hope a little better. However, the processor and the GPU are most efficient, the RAM is also present in quantity and leaves many devices on site.Samsung did not however push the vice to 16 GB of RAM, certainly realizing that it would not be very useful. At least, apparently.

Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.

If the smartphone does not have 16 GB of effective RAM on the technical sheet, it allows you to swipe 4 GB of storage to transform them into RAM if necessary. This makes a maximum total of 16 GB of RAM for the device, which is certainly quite important, but far from being essential. In addition, let's not forget one thing.

Fleas are flash models, which only offer a limited amount of data in writing. However, even by taking 4 GB of additional RAM, to write at least 400 times the total size of the storage on the smartphone, it will be necessary to use it for years and years.Small quick calculation, 400 x 256 GB = 102 TB of written data, I doubt that a single smartphone in the world has already written 102 TB of data in its life.

The smartphone heats a little but not excessively either, we went up to 37 ° C with the Benchmark Antutu and have lost 2% of the battery load, which is not excessive.

Geekbench of Z Fold 3

The geekbench score of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is 3351 points. It is a good score for an Android smartphone in this range and above all, much better than on the Mi 11 Ultra, despite the use of a strictly identical processor. It is clear that the Z Fold 3 is much better cooled.

The single-core score is also satisfactory, with 866 points. This is however an average score, taking into account the different power of all the cpu cups.Indeed, we have a very powerful heart here, 3 others powerful and finally, four less powerful, optimized for a longer autonomy than other hearts.

Z Fold 3 Performancetest

We have also measured the performance of RAM and storage chip.Regarding the RAM, we obtain with these 12 GB of LPDDR5, speeds of 3669 MB/s in reading and 3353 MB/s in writing, with latencies of 26.3 ns.It’s very good, on this we have absolutely nothing to complain about, it’s one of the most efficient RAMs found in a smartphone.

Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.

As for the storage chip, we have the version of the “Entry -Entle -Entle -De -range” smartphone with 256 GB of storage. The chip offers very good reading flows, of the order of 1376 MB/s, but quite weak in writing, with only 416 MB/s.This is certainly, but it is not really balanced and we would have been able to expect a little more from the storage chip of this smartphone side.

3dmark of Z Fold 3

The Adreno 660 is the most powerful market graphics processor on the market at a time when I write these words. However, I ask myself a few questions about its exploitation. If other manufacturers succeed without concerns to go beyond the maximum score that the application can measure on Slingshot, this is not the case with Z Fold 3 for a very simple and very good reason.

Indeed, the screen offers many more pixels than other smartphones, which therefore requires more work in the GPU and somehow reduces the performance of the graphic chip.If the score is thus, it is indeed the fault of the screen. Here are the different scores:

In terms of use in play, I was able to test on various more or less gourmet games, with some fairly heavy like GTA San Andreas. The smartphone is perfectly fluid in any situation, without concern for fluidity.

Screens

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 has two screens, the first on the folded smartphone, which makes a single slice of the device. This first screen is a Dynamic Amoled with a frequency of 120 Hz, covered with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus. It is a 6.2 inch screen, with a resolution of 2208 x 1768 pixels, for a display ratio of 25: 9.It’s much more than Sony smartphones, but it’s in a very specific case.

The screen is pleasant although I always find the amoled from Samsung a little aggressive for the eyes with high luminosity. It is however very practical for certain actions, such as answering the phone but to send messages, it is not the most practical in view of its fairly reduced width.

I particularly appreciate the fact that the screen takes the entire height of the device, contrary to what the first smartphone in this range was peopos. Here finally, we have a real screen, pleasant but with a punch camera in the middle, which does not go unnoticed. It is not so serious, however, this is the case on many high -end smartphones.

It is possible on the two screens, to adjust the white balance, as well as the color space. We have the choice between:

Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.

For my part, wishing to make the most of a smartphone, I program it in bright mode. These settings are available on the two screens. We also have protection against accidental supports, preventing your smartphone from calling anyone while it is in your pocket.I know about it who would need this option. It is also possible to increase tactile sensitivity to use your smartphone with gloves.

It is possible to adjust the frequency of updating of the screens, either in 120 Hz, or in 60 Hz but there is no automatic or intermediate mode. Finally, the dark mode is available, which is essential on any smartphone these days. The latter is configurable. If in terms of options, Galaxy Z Fold 3 looks like any good high -end keyboard, it is not so much the same in terms of its screens. We come to the central screen.

The large 7.6 -inch central screen occupies 88.8% of the area of the device. It is also a Dynamic AMOLED slab in 120 Hz, with an HDR 10+ treatment of the image. He offers in peak, a maximum brightness of 1,200 nits, which is in the highest luminosities on a smartphone, with a few other top -end tenors in the field.

Its resolution is worthy of that of an iPhone, namely 2208 x 1768 pixels very exactly. All for a pixel density of 374 dpi.The theoretical side passed, let's move on to practice and what this screen really is.To put it simply, it is beautiful and very practical. To do a little more complex, I am not a big fan of the fold that always appears and still in the middle of the latter.

Subscribe to rotation on Youtube!

We must be aware that we have a foldable smartphone here. However, if some efforts have been made since the first of the name, there is always a fairly large fold in the center of the screen.Which is particularly unfortunate, especially since the latter is clearly visible when the screen is off.

Fortunately, in use, on a fairly light background, it is hardly seen at all.Samsung has worked well and the Galaxy Z Fold 3 offers a cleaner screen than the old versions.

The other big novelty is the front camera under the screen, invisible. We really don't see her but we can perfectly distinguish her location. The concern is that if Samsung has covered this front camera by the screen, it must still have the space to take photos. For this, the screen is therefore not complete and as clear as elsewhere on this small area.Precisely, it's a shame because it hurts this little area in particular in the eyes.

We can appreciate Samsung's efforts to hide the camera, however, the technological prowess is there. This technology is however at its beginnings and brands try everything to hide the front camera and have the most full screen as possible.Maybe this time will be the right one!

Regarding touch areas, the Z Fold 3 is tactile on the entire surface of its screen.

Camera

On the back of the smartphone, there are three photo sensors. Not four like other devices but only three, it is enough for a smartphone in itself, many other devices offer only three photo sensors on the back and that does not pose any concern. The main sensor is a 12 Mp model, the ultra-wide-angle sensor and the telephoto lens for the zoom.

Here is how the photo sensors of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 are distributed:

Taille du capteur1/1,76 »1/3,6 »
Taille de pixel1.8µm1.12µm1.0µm
Focale26 mm12 mm52 mm

The telephoto telephoto makes it possible to make X2 optics zoom, which is good not to lose quality, but which is quite disturbing when you know that this cost smartphone almost 2000 euros.Indeed, an X2 optical zoom is worse than on an iPhone or any other very high -end Android smartphone, never reaching such a price.

However, like Sony and Apple, Samsung shows us that there is no need to put 108 Mp goals on a smartphone to have beautiful photos.Good objectives, worked and with suitable software processing is enough perfectly. Here are the different features to be used in photo / video:

All this is very complete, we have the possibility of filming in full HD 240 FPS in idle and HD 960 images per second. This is a characteristic of Samsung High Gem Smartphones which in reality, has not evolved so much over time.Portrait video mode is also interesting to use, to take good quality videos with a background blur. Now let's see what it gives in photo quality in several situations.

Automatic photo

In automatic mode, it is undeniable that the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 is doing very well. However, as very often at Samsung, there is a slightly strong color saturation so that the colors seem overplayed. The smartphone screen in addition to that, does not really help to have the most realistic colors possible.Samsung appreciates screens with strong saturation, it's the same for photos.

Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.

The photos remain very correct, if they are not completely realistic in terms of colors, it remains very correct and we know the flawless know-how of Samsung on this point there.Beware, however, that the weather is not too capricious and that the ambient brightness is correct.

Zoom

We found one thing, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 only allows you to zoom in to X10.It's a shame because on such a smartphone, we could have appreciated a more efficient zoom but that is not the case.Too bad, we can always console ourselves with a zoom x0.5.The latter imposes a lot of distortion, however, it is normal when we take pictures closely with a wide-angle lens. However, I appreciate having a large angle x0.5.

x0,5
x1
x2
x5
x10

For such a high -end smartphone, it is a shame to see that zoom X10 is not as good as hoped. The details lack sharpness, certainly the weather was not really to the advantage of the device, but the photos do not reveal an exceptional quality of the Z Fold 3, it's a shame.

Night photo

We took photos in average brightness conditions and in the night with a few ambient lights, lampposts that illuminate correctly but without more.Already, in average light conditions, it is not optimal as we can see.Montparnasse station also wore advertisements for the interested party among others. But we lose details, we lose depth in the photo and the perspective.

Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.

As for the night photo, in the real night and without hazardous light conditions, here is what it gives.Night mode brings more clarity in the image but without deteriorating it.Fortunately, Samsung knows how to do it.Night mode also brings a better notion of depth with more details. If the photos are not exceptional for a smartphone that role the € 2000, it remains very correct, however.

Front cameras

Let's first talk about the front camera located on the small screen. The latter offers a resolution of 10 MP, which is not extravagant, of course, but completely suitable. We have a better quality than on many smartphones with a 16 or even 32 MP sensor that manage the camera very badly.Portrait mode is also managed correctly. It also allows you to film in 4K UHD 60 FPS.

Caméra frontale poinçon
Caméra frontale sous l’écran

Regarding the front camera under the main 7.6 inch screen, it is only a resolution of 4 MP.However, if you are still wondering if it is seen or not that it is under the screen, the answer is very clearly yes.The colors are a little altered, which is a shame. In addition to a fairly average quality, it often pulls towards the reds.

Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.

My eyes go red when they are not at all, the outline also so that it would be thought that I have consumed drugs or has not slept for about 4 or 5 days.It is on the one hand disappointing, but on the other hand I did not expect an exceptional result coming from a completely new technology which must still prove itself.

Video

Fortunately, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 allows you to film in 4K Ultra HD 60 FPS.The quality of the videos is very correct but necessarily stabilization, suffers a little in view of the manufacture of the smartphone.Indeed, the concern is above all that this kind of smartphone is quite complex to stabilize.

ONE UI interface

Oneui is now in version 3, after a deployment a few years ago.Samsung had decided to redo his interface and I first, I succumbed to it for a while. It is true that one UI is pleasant and has many features starting with the quick launch bar on the right. This small bar to pull allows you to slide a few shortcuts so as to open certain apps quickly. That's all.

On the first screen, the main screen, we find a keyboard that arises ipad mini, when you want to use your two hands to write as with a smartphone. It's pretty practical and it allows us to use the smartphone ... like a smartphone for the time.We strongly advise you to leave the keyboard as such because it makes the seizure much more pleasant and faster. It remains possible to leave the keyboard in standard mode or put it in floating mode, allowing you to move it a bit as you want.

Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.

On the other hand, on the second screen, where the keyboard is very wide on the first screen, it is the opposite.Even an iPhone 5 did not have such a thin keyboard in width! It is not very easy to send messages, not to mention the fact that we are now used to big screens. However, it is largely possible, paying attention however to how you write.

We find as on many smartphones, a dark fashion or dark fashion. The latter allows you to be activated when you wish, either manually or automatically at very specific hours. In addition to that, there is an adaptive color filter mode, comparable to the TrueTone lighting on iPhone. This lighting mode adapts to the ambient brightness to reduce blue light while offering you a panel of colors of the best that are.

Connectivity

Like any good high -end smartphone, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is naturally 5G compatible. It is also Wi-Fi 6 and even Wi-Fi 6th, has NFC and Bluetooth 5.2.All the latest communication technologies and standards are available on this smartphone, which does not have a Jack port but rather a USB-C 3 port.2 For recharge in particular and for the OTG (data transfer via a USB key, to a computer, etc.).

As for 4G and 5G bands available on this smartphone, as usual at Samsung, all French bands are covered. Here are the cell bands supported by the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3:

The 700 MHz and 800 MHz strips are supported, Free subscribers will be happy, 5G at 700 MHz is the only one that works correctly at Free very often for my part.As for flows, here is what it gives in Wi-Fi 6.

Wi-Fi performance is good, with the 6th Wi-Fi connection and my ASUS XT8 router that I use instead of the ridiculous Wi-Fi of my box.The 5G speed is also correct but depends a lot on the operator and where we are located. For my part, the performances are not glorious despite a priori, the 3.5 GHz.

Sound quality

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 has stereo speakers, one at the top of the smartphone and the other at the bottom. Both are positioned on the left -wing shutter of the device. The speaker for calls is positioned on the folded part, just above the small screen. It is indeed very discreet and almost invisible.

If he offers Bluetooth for wireless music, we will be interested in the audio quality of his integrated speakers.Without further ado, the latter is excellent. For a smartphone in this range and this quality, we were not expecting.I am not disappointed, the sound is powerful, clear and clear. The bass is well marked, acute and mediums also, optimization is really good.

Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.

That we agree, however, it remains a sound of a smartphone. It is not the quality of an iPad Pro or a Bluetooth speaker, although some old ultra-cheap models are largely beaten by the audio of this Z Fold 3.The quality is very good indeed, for a smartphone, let's keep it in mind.

Autonomy

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 has a 4400 mAh battery. For such a large smartphone, it is not a capacity as important as you can do, but that does not take place, we tested the device for several days, in real conditions of use.

Using the 120 Hz screen, which is much more pleasant than leaving it in 60 Hz elsewhere, it holds less necessarily. The higher frequency consumes more battery and it is noticed, significantly. However, you can have a short day without too many problems. The only condition, to have use of the smartphone that is not extreme. The brightness of the device has a strong tendency to remain high in automatic mode.

Decreasing it manually or cutting the automatic luminosity setting can be an idea to save a few minutes of battery.Recall that in a smartphone, the screen is one of the main sources or even the main source of energy consumption. In intensive use, with games, connection sharing, photos, videos, ... we can hold a very small day.The frequency of the screen can however change the situation.

Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.

To recharge the device, it happens with a charger of your choice, since no sector adapter is provided with the device. The smartphone recharges in wired with a power of 25 watts at best, which is not extraordinary. At least that proves to us that it is not only Apple that remains on a relatively slow recharge. It can also be recharged wirelessly at a power of 11 watts.

Regarding reverse recharge, it is available on this device. The power remains very limited, however, to only 4.5 watts, which can be understood.Too much power would overheat the smartphone and / or would empty the battery very quickly.

Lock and safety

To unlock, the Samsung Galaxy Fold Z3 is equipped with a facial recognition system, which is quite classic. However, this system remains like on all other Android smartphones, without the possibility of unlocking the night smartphone without having the maximum brightness in the face.

However, facial recognition works perfectly well during the day and remains fairly fast.It works perfectly well with the two front cameras, both that of the small screen at the front as that under the large central screen.Samsung has an advantage compared to other Android smartphones, facial recognition has a little more difficulty in recognizing faces via a photo, unlike other entry -level smartphones like high -end.

Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.

There is also a fingerprint sensor, on the right edge of the device in the locking / unlock button. Why not a fingerprint sensor under the screen?Quite simply because Samsung uses ultrasonic technology, a little different from other manufacturers, which is not necessarily more efficient. In addition, a fingerprint sensor should be put under each screen.

It is already a technological feat to succeed in putting two screens, a battery and electronic components in less than 8 millimeters, we will be satisfied with the lateral fingerprint sensor that works wonderfully well.

Galaxy Z Fold 3: Notice test

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 marks a good evolution compared to the previous version and especially compared to the first of the name.It is a smartphone that always targets such a high -end audience with a price that has slightly softened over time.It is available with 256 or 512 GB of storage.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3: Notice

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 is a good very high -end smartphone, as always, Samsung puts the package to make its flagship even more pleasant to use.It still lacks some improvements to reach perfection, especially in terms of central folding, but I am convinced that Samsung will arrive in the coming years.
