Test of the real GT Master: the choice of passion or reason?

Smartphones manufacturers like to use suffixes in order to qualify the various variations as a product. In addition to the now classic Lite, Pro, Max or Ultra, the latest find comes straight from Realme with the GT "Master", the declination of the Realme GT marketed a few months ago.

According to its designers, nothing changes ... However, a new processor, a new camera and new finishes are appearing. It is still always a Realme GT, therefore a flagship Killer intended to hunt on the lands of the high -end while retaining a contained price (€ 399 in 8/256 GB version and € 349 in6/128 GB, excluding launch promotion).

Design: classic

The GT Master is above all a GT, whose design and general ergonomics it takes.Like his big brother, he does not really do originality. The metal chassis is sandwiched between two Gorilla 5 glass sheets from Corning.

The control keys are distributed between the left flank (volume control) and right (switching on).The base receives a USB-C connector, three slots intended to let the sound produced by the speaker pass, as well as an audio jack port.

© Marc Mitrani pour Clubic

The front side is dedicated to the 6.43 ’’ screen diagonal. The Realme GT Master presents a perforation in its upper left corner in order to make room for the front camera. He hides under his surface an optical fingerprint reader that we consider reliable and reasonably rapid.

If there is originality, it is rather on the rear side. Our test model, of an immaculate white, has a matt and silky finish ensuring a clearly more pleasant grip than if it were smooth and shiny.Collateral benefit, it is much less sensitive to dirt and fingerprints, which can only be appreciated.

© Marc Mitrani pour Clubic

The GT Master is also available in a very classic blue version as well as in an edition suitecase design. The rear side is then covered with "gray vegan leather" (convoluted way to designate a similarity) to the embossing reminiscent of a suitcase. This moose look, which we unfortunately could not have in hand for this test, is signed by the Japanese designer Naoto Fukasawa.

No originality, however, in the look of the domino -type photo module. It exceeds enough of the rear side to make the device wobbly if placed on a flat surface, unless you slip the smartphone into the shell that Realme has the delicacy of providing standard in the box.

With the notable exception of the following Edition CONTINUE DESIGN, the GT MASTER does not really differ from the aesthetics of current smartphones.Should we regret it?Not necessarily, as long as the quality of construction is there, which is the case here.On the other hand, the absence of IP certification is deplored, recurring gap at Realme.

Display : un HDR qui ne dit pas tout le temps son nom

We do not change a formula that wins ... and in the case of the GT Master, we do not evolve it either. The smartphone therefore has the same Super Amoled 6.43 ’’ original Samsung slab as its big brother. In a 20: 9 format, it displays 1,080 x 2,400 pixels and covers 91 % of the front.

The black borders that surround it are discreet enough not to be embarrassing, even if the smartphone's forehead and chin are wider. The slab has straight edges and not of the waterfall type.Even if it may seem unsightly at some, given the current design cannons, we do not really regret it: this avoids unforeseen touch when we hold the aircraft by the sides.

It was mentioned earlier, the perforation housed in the upper left corner shelters the front camera.Failing to be invisible, it is not embarrassing in common use.

Test du Realme GT Master : le choix de la passion ou de la raison ?

The image produced by this Super Amoled slab is of very good quality. The manufacturer says it has a brightness of 1,000 peak nits. This surely explains why he remains very readable in all circumstances, including in full sun.By the way, you cannot advise you too much to neutralize the dark mode during a sunny day: the display will only be more readable.

© Marc Mitrani pour Clubic© Marc Mitrani pour Clubic© Marc Mitrani pour Clubic

The slab supports a maximum 120 Hz refresh frequency and the image is then of a good fluidity, but the electrical autonomy takes a hit.We can force a lower frequency (60 Hz) to save the battery, or opt for the automatic mode that adapts refreshment according to the Active application.

© Marc Mitrani pour Clubic

Realme leaves little latitude in the adjustment of the colorimetric rendering. We can opt for the "sweet" mode which covers the traditional SRVB space and which we consider more faithful, especially for fixed images. If by chance you were tempted by a more cinematographic rendering, then select the lively mode in order to activate the DCI-P3 profile.Standard, in fact, of the cinema industry, it produces an image in slightly boosted colors, therefore more flattering to the eye.

Bien que realme ne mentionne pas de certification HDR, la compatibilité semble être là © Marc Mitrani pour Clubic

Even if the GT Master screen does not equal those of smartphones sold more than 1,000 euros it does not deserve, far from it.To be convinced, just compare it to an IPS panel equipping an equivalent price smartphone released two or three years ago.And if Realme does not refer to an HDR 10/HDR 10+ certification at any time, the smartphone appears compatible on our test utilities.

YouTube reconnait l'appareil comme étant HDR10 © Marc Mitrani pour Clubic

In fact, an application like Netflix will only offer SDR content and will not bother.YouTube is a little more permissive by agreeing to send an HDR10 flow to the device. This one is then perfectly read.Only a "Light HDR video mode" parameter in system settings vaguely refers to this.

Information taken, the Snapdragon 778G actually knows how to manage HDR.Simply remains to implement it and activate it.From there to think that the GT Master is the subject of a software clamping for marketing reasons, there is only one step, which we do not hesitate to take.

Audio: minimum service

The GT Master is equipped with a single speaker housed at its base.It will therefore be necessary to do with a monophonic sound or go through headphones. It produces a correct sound, nothing more, where the low frequencies are unsurprised. It will also be necessary to do without compatibility Dolby Atmos, Realme having here retained Real Sound technology.

Les fentes du haut parleur et le jack audio © Marc Mitrani pour Clubic

Even if it does not break bricks, the sound produced by the GT Master remains correct. It will be enough to watch a television show, a video on YouTube or listen to a podcast. The use of a wired or Bluetooth helmet is much more satisfactory, the sound product being then much more flattering.

Pas de Dolby Atmos, mais une compatibilité Real Sound © Marc Mitrani pour Clubic

One thing is certain: at the end of our listening tests, the qualifier Master surely does not apply to audio!Even if everything was not perfect, the "short" GT had the good taste to offer stereophonic sound as well as Dolby Atmos compatibility.Like what, the "master" can sometimes be exceeded ...

Performances: the student exceeds the master's degree

Audio is not the only area where the GT Master is overtaken by its predecessor, which can also show it in terms of performance. The smartphone is built around a Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G SOC, accompanied by 8 GB of working memory and 256 GB of storage (not expandable). The octocœurs used here is a cousin of the Snapdragon 888.

To design it, the founder has made some concessions (bad tongues will talk about clamps) so as not to walk on the trays of its high -end.The 778G is thus calibrated to provide a financially attractive entry point for premium ranges.

Very well, but what does it give in fact?Nothing very surprising. At the little gross performance game, the GT Master displays an antutu score of 527,712 points, that is much lower than what we observed on the GT during our test.Same thing for 3 D Mark and Geekbench 5 which provide scores of 2,494 points and 2,889 points in multihulls respectively (783 points in monocheur).

In practice, these scores remain completely honorable for a product of this type.Even if we sometimes have to make some concessions on the frame rate or the quality of detail, the available power allows you to properly take advantage of recent games, photo touch -up or video editing applications.

In the majority of cases, the multitasking remains fluid. We will not need to be very concerned with the number of applications open as long as they are not too greedy in resources. However, there are some slowdowns in very specific cases, especially when the graphic processor is strongly requested.Nothing very surprising, unfortunately.

Il est possible d'affecter une zone de la mémoire Flash en complément de la RAM © Marc Mitrani pour Clubic

It should also be noted that it is possible to artificially increase working memory by allocating 2, 3 or 5 GB to it with flash storage. If this can be pretty on the technical sheet, we have not really noticed a blatant improvement by activating this possibility. On the contrary: by completely deactivating it, benchmarks provide better results.

But as we say regularly, a raw power score does not always reflect performance in real use.

Realme UI 2.0: Always as well

We are not going to dwell on Realme UI, the house overlay based on Android 11. Not that it is not worthy of interest: it is even one of the most pleasant Android overlay of the moment. We have already reviewed all its features during the Realme 8, 8 Pro and GT tests as well as Find X3 Pro, Find X3 Neo and Find X3 Lite d'Oppo. The latter are certainly equipped with Coloros 11, which differs from Realmeui mainly by the name.

It will still be necessary to compose with the dozen bloatware preinstalled by Realme. If they are sometimes interesting (streaming services, social networks, etc.), their presence is always annoying and it will be necessary to spend a little time manually uninstalling them.Only soloop, a small video editing software in the IA sauce seems to us worthy of interest and we will keep it with pleasure.

Whether they are called Coloros 11 or Realmeui 2.0, the bone supplied keeps the spirit of Android Stock while filling some of its shortcomings, especially in terms of personalization. With the Samsung Oneui, in our opinion, he is one of the most interesting of the moment.

Autonomy: in the right average

The GT Master has a 4,300 mAh battery, or rather two 2,150 mAh batteries in order to implement the Ultra -fast Superdart load mechanism: we will come back later. If we stick to the figures, the GT Master has a less important energy reserve than the 4,500 mAh of the GT, which could suggest less autonomy.Surprisingly, it is not.

In traditional use (office, internet, a little streaming video, 30 -minute 3D game session, some phone calls, photo/video and 60 Hz screen in adaptive light), you can easily exceed 1.5 days withoutGo through the recharge box.

© Marc Mitrani pour Clubic

Better still: the two full days can be reached if we sacrifice some secondary, but consumers.Let us quote for the example 5G (not yet very widespread), the Always ON screen or the vocal activation of the assistant.

In more intensive use, it will be exhausted in one day. It’s not so bad given his equipment.Despite the drop in battery capacity compared to the GT, the GT Master is therefore not pale and remains in the good average of current products.

Requiring the battery can only be done by going through a wired charger, the induction not being integrated into the smartphone. The Superdart technology always works miracles: by loading the two accumulators in parallel thanks to the 65 Watts supplied sector block (Cuckoo Apple and Samsung), we go from 0 to 100 % in 31 minutes without taking over a risk of overheating.

In order to achieve this performance, Realme uses a USB-C cable and an electronic power supply to avoid overheating and any potential problem. If one of the two elements is not certified Superdart, the load is then at slow speed at 10 watts. On this aspect, the "large manufacturers" are pale with their fast loads taking between 60 and 90 minutes ...

Photo: moderately average

The GT Master's dorsal photo module has three objectives:

© Marc Mitrani pour Clubic

The front camera is equipped with a single lens embedding a 32 MP sensor (1/2, 74 ’’; photosites 0.8 µm) and a 28 mm f/2.5 lens.

Let's quickly pass on the second which produces correct images in good light, a little less when it weakens. The portrait mode performs a correct job and you can play with the filters. He will therefore produce selfies of good hold or ego-vidéo completely honorable in Full HD Maxi.

The back camera adopts a coherent configuration with regard to the positioning of the GT Master. It is almost identical to that equipping Realme GT, itself already encountered on a palanque of mid-range smartphones. The results of our tests are in line with what we could hope for.

© Marc Mitrani pour Clubic

In correct brightness, the images made by the main module are good.Only we note a small loss of dive on the details by the stage.Same observation in ultra grand angle, with the added bonus of the appearance of chromatic aberrations (purple fringes) on the details and the contrasted background on the edge.

L'ultra grand-angle laisse apparaitre des abbérations chromatiques sur les bords de l'image © Marc Mitrani pour Clubic

Although it is essentially digital, the 2x zoom does not do too badly: the details are largely preserved and the colorimetry remains faithful. The image is then completely usable and you can even afford the luxury of an average crop when needed. This good surprise is surely explained by the performance of the sensor and the quality of the digital signal processing provided by the Snapdragon 877G.

Things are spoiling from the 5x zoom, where the digital zoom begins to smooth the image a little too much in order to interpole the missing details. The result is still looking at as long as you don't zoom too much.It is from a 10x magnification - and a fortiori 20x - that the image quality is obviously degraded. We will avoid as much as possible to use these values.

Mode macro © Marc Mitrani pour Clubic

The macro module does what it can to produce images as correct as possible despite a sensor of only 2 MP.In order not to worsen the lack of sharpness due to the sensor, we will position the objective 40 mm from the subject to photograph by holding his breathing so as not to move (no stabilization).

Le bokeh artificiel est crédible sur les scènes simples © Marc Mitrani pour Clubic Parfois, l'IA se fait un peu piéger (structure rouge)...... ou beaucoup (feuilles sur la gauche)

The portrait mode, finally, is relatively reliable on the simple scenes. On complex subjects, the algorithm for the creation of blurring of background is often made on small details.Nothing dramatic, but the artificial aspect of the Bokeh thus created is obvious.Note that it is still not possible to manage the level of vagueness after shooting. Will the manufacturer remedy it one day?We no longer dare to hope.

In low light or in night mode, the results are not extraordinary.Digital noise appears quickly and the loss of details becomes obvious as soon as you zoom in a little. As in broad daylight, the views made with the main module are the most advantageous provided that you do not look too closely. In ultra-angle or as soon as you activate the zoom, digital noise and smoothing applied by the image processor destroy the details of the image.

© Marc Mitrani pour Clubic

The GT Master's photographic function is neither failed nor remarkable. It remains generally correct for everyday use, but will leave a passionate photographer on its hunger. No wonder given that given the price positioning of the smartphone. Why not have taken up photo technologies implemented in Realme 8 Pro?Of a similar price, the quality of its images is much better.

Realme GT Master: Clubic opinion

Funny product that this GT Master who often lets himself be overcome by the “very short” GT ... if the autonomy is satisfactory (just like the charging time), we would have liked a notch above in terms of audio, calculation and photography performance.

Without being catastrophic - far from there - the GT Master joins the cohort of smartphones positioned at the top of the mid -range.Failing to desire it, we can satisfy it.But he is missing a few small details to be a real flaghship killer.Shame.

Realme GT Master

8

Positioned in the mid -range, the GT Master is one of the smartphones generally pleasant to use without however being a real crush.A reasoned purchase if not passionate.
