How does the population census work?

What is the census?

The census is a method used by INSEE to find out the number of dwellings and the number of inhabitants in each French municipality. This is a free, mandatory and annual data collection, whose information is protected. Indeed, in accordance with CNIL regulations, no personal information is recorded or stored and the enumerators are bound by professional secrecy.

Thus, by combining all the data collected, it is possible to know the demographic evolution of the country. But that's not all, these data collections carried out in the field by sworn agents also make it possible to obtain more information in order to establish statistics, in particular thanks to information on sex, age, professional activity carried out, the type of accommodation and sometimes the means of transport as well as the daily movements.
