Available since June for Google Pixel owners, Google has announced that locked folders should soon be accessible to everyone.

This feature hides sensitive photos and videos from your library. Thus, these files are hidden in a protected folder and are not referenced in the media list, making it possible to avoid inadvertently showing a photo that was supposed to have remained confidential.

Folders are password or biometric protected

“With locked folders in Google Photos, you can add photos to a passcode-protected space and they won't won't display when you scroll through Google Photos or other apps on your phone,” Google wrote.

These folders can only be unlocked with a password or via the biometric sensor installed on the phone. Google had touted these locked folders as a feature parents could use to keep photos of their children or pets away from prying eyes. There is no doubt that users will make very wise use of it.

Locked Google Photos folders will come to all smartphones running Android 6 and later. These folders can be defined as needed and photos already in the collection can be moved to the folder. On Pixels, it is notably possible to save photos directly in the locked folder, but Google has not indicated whether this functionality will be accessible to everyone.

Finally, any photo saved in a locked folder will not end up in the cloud backup. They will only be saved locally.
