In October 2020, Apple unveiled the iPhone 12 range which was accompanied by a new ecosystem: the Magsafe. A magnetic circle on the back of smartphones allows them to lead to all kinds of accessories and recharge by induction at maximum speed of 15W (against 7.5W for the Qi standard). That's all well and good, but here it is: the sauce is hard to take, more than a year after the launch of the MagSafe. Mean by this that compatible accessories are not legion, despite the appeal of the iPhone market. There are indeed Belkin and Mophie which offer charging stations and docks, but there is no rush at the gate.

How to explain this apathy on the part of third-party manufacturers? Apple is first to blame: the MagSafe third-party charger certification program only started this summer. Interested props must obtain MagSafe modules from Apple, a component that comes at a cost of course. Added to this is the time required to develop and assemble the products. All in a context of shortage of electronic components…

As for Apple accessories, there's the MagSafe charger of course, along with its evil twin the dual charger and a plethora of cases. Last summer, the manufacturer launched an external battery which was able to seduce by its concept, but a little less on the execution and the interest, finally.

Ultimately, it is up to Apple to animate and energize an ecosystem that is running out of steam. As nature abhors a vacuum, the "MagFake" accessory market proliferates, but with a slower recharging speed. As we saw in our test of Native Union's Snap Magnetic charger, it's not that much of a handicap.
