Bloody "exorcism" in Panama: 50 years in prison for members of a sect

Sentences of up to 50 years in prison have been handed down to members of a Panamanian cult who on January 14, 2020 killed six children and a pregnant woman during a ceremony aimed at “chasing out the devil”, according to announced Friday, December 3 the Panamanian prosecution. “The Court imposed the maximum sentence of 50 years in prison on each of the seven defendants” of the “New Light of God” sect, the prosecution said in a press release.

Two other members of the sect had previously each been sentenced to 47 years in prison after reaching an agreement with the prosecution, the same source said. The members of the sect were found guilty by the court in Changuinola (north-east) of having tied up their victims, including six children aged between one and 17 years old from the indigenous Ngäbe Buglé community of El Terron, before kill them with sticks, Bibles and machetes on the pretext of "chasing the demon out of them".

The pregnant woman, dragged by force to the church of the sect, was killed in front of her five children who were themselves later to be beaten to death, as well as a sixth minor, in the presence of the assembly of the sect. Several witnesses of the scene, themselves injured, had fled and alerted the police. Upon their arrival, the police discovered about fifteen people detained in the place of worship, including several children. During the investigation, the bodies of the victims were discovered, still attached and in an advanced state of decomposition, in a mass grave located an hour's walk from the scene of the crime.
