46 comments The surprise of the last keynote was not the long-awaited AirTags or the new iMac which logically gets rid of Intel, but the purple iPhone 12. Apple doesn't consistently introduce a new iPhone color along the way, and when it does, it's usually red.
After a short pre-order period, the purple iPhone 12 is now available, at the same price as the other colors of course. This color is available for iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini. The iPhone 12 Pro, which has a different matte finish, is not eligible.
So how is this purple? If we initially wrote that it was a purple iPhone, it is because the color is more saturated than the mauve of the really very pale iPhone 11. There, the color is a little more assertive. When the very light purple of the iPhone 11 could almost be forgotten, you have to be more of a purple lover to appreciate the new color of the iPhone 12.
From the front, as with the other colors, the mauve is discreet, you just see a colored border around the screen – or nothing at all if you have a shell that wraps around the edges of the phone.
But if the official name of the color is mauve and not purple, it is because it is a pale purple. In daylight, it can sometimes be taken for a pale blue or gray – but not as much as the purple iPhone 11 in the same conditions, even lighter.
Ultimately, this purple iPhone 12 should satisfy all purple lovers who found the purple iPhone 11 far too pale. As for those who don't have purple in their hearts…this iPhone isn't for them.
The new purple shells
If you're a fan of the mix of red and blue but bought an iPhone 12 in a different color, all is not lost. Apple is now shipping an amethyst silicone case ($55) and a deep purple leather case ($65) for all iPhone 12 models—both are MagSafe compatible.
The amethyst silicone case corresponds most closely to the representation that we commonly have of purple. It's good real purple for those who like it.
As for the deep purple leather shell, it is difficult to distinguish the purple so much it looks like navy blue.
