Rumor seems to indicate that Apple is preparing a MagSafe battery, an accessory that would charge the iPhone 12 by being held by the magnets on the back of the smartphone. While waiting to find out if the company will actually release such a product, Anker did not wait to release a competitor, a battery adapted to the iPhone 12 and which charges them by induction, maintained by magnets.

This accessory appeared on the US Amazon site, where it is still marked unavailable. According to 9To5 Mac, it's due out in early March, but it's unclear if a European release is planned. Across the Atlantic, it will take $ 40, a price certainly much lower than what Apple would ask for its own MagSafe battery. But there are counterparts to this sweet price.

For starters, it's not real MagSafe, it's a "MagFake" product, i.e. a traditional induction charger with magnets. Do not expect to charge your iPhone 12 quickly, you will have to settle for 5 W output. We can also note that the accessory is quite thick (1.6 cm) and not particularly light, with its 130 grams on the scale.

Inductive charging on the smartphone will not be the only option, Anker having added a USB port on one side of its battery. It will be used both to charge the accessory and to provide power to other devices, including your iPhone 12, if you want to charge it faster and lighten it during use. With a capacity of 5,000 mAh, it takes about a full tank for an iPhone 12 or 12 Pro, a little more for the mini and 3/4 charge for an iPhone 12 Pro max, according to the manufacturer.

If you don't want to wait for this Anker product to arrive in Europe, remember that there is no shortage of white label models from China. The prices are unbeatable and the quality may be enough while waiting for Apple to decide.

Energy efficiency close to 0 (between battery charging and iPhone charging)

It is time they abandoned this system...eventually, it should even be banned. It's a waste of energy

Like you just have to delete a word and it's no longer a problem ;). Seriously, I hope you know how wireless charging works. Because once you understand the mechanism, it's hard not to find it absurd.

loludovic31 |

It seems a bit silly given the loss of energy in wireless charging.. he should have kept the idea of holding it by magnetism but charging it through the lightning port

François31400 |

@loludovic31

You can still do it with a mini cable

It's funny...When the iPhone didn't have induction charging...all the haters (choose your side comrade 🤣) were complaining that Apple was crap!!And now that it has induction charging "pffff this system is shit.... Apple should remove it from its iPhones" 🤣🤣🤣 Jacques Martin said "the children are great" In 2021, we could say "the haters are great” 😁.

@romainB84

I never expected wireless charging for the part. And I'm not criticizing wireless charging, I'm criticizing wireless battery charging. On mains we don't care about the performance since the energy source is unlimited but on battery it's a bit of a shame to lose a large part of the energy when it would have sufficed with a wire to improve the thing ^ ^

Cecile_Aelita |

@loludovic31

If there's a place where we don't care about performance, it's on the mains 🤣!! Thank you for the anti-ecological message!! Robert... have a beer and we'll go back to see PSG play!!!

@romainB84

Well actually what I'm saying isn't silly. The electricity we have at home is almost 100% supplied by nuclear power. However, nuclear power is not regulated, that is to say that even when we consume less, the power stations still supply as much, so it is not really useful to reduce consumption except to reduce the bill. But “wasting” electricity does not really increase pollution since the power stations constantly supply the same energy. It is rather not consuming enough of it which would be absurd since the power stations would produce it for nothing. It's a complex question anyway. In any case, the ecological question is not really about our consumption but rather about how to create energy. As long as we are nuclear, our impact is minimal, the power plants will always provide their energy regardless of our consumption. The whole thing being not to exaggerate to avoid having to build new ones

Cecile_Aelita |

@loludovic31

Are you aware that nuclear power is not a fatality in itself? 😉 If / when we can do without it, (as soon as possible), will it be in our interest to do so? 😉! In short, we're drifting on a somewhat slippery subject that I don't have the slightest desire to discuss with the people (haters/bourrains/genie_elitistes/grands_penseurs: choosing sides 🤣) who comment here 😉.

Same, in the meantime I ordered this one which can do just about anything: https://fr.aliexpress.com/item/1005002091085925.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.2d0b6c37BgNdho

I've already said it but this system is such nonsense... many have applauded and continue but when I hear the pro-green speeches and we talk about a proprietary induction charging system it's pure mouth footage. I've been using magnetic cables for quite some time, which combine the best of both worlds and more: fast charging and multi-connector charging, the same cable can charge an iPhone, Android or other... usb-c, micro usb and lightning!
